Palm kernel oil is extracted from the palm kernel, the seed or nut within the date palm fruit.  Once the palm fruit is collected the fruit is removed from the palm kernel.  The fruit is used to eat and make palm oil from.  This palm oil is of a much higher quality than the palm kernel oil.

You can follow the process through photos in the photo gallery, but just briefly, the process is described below:
  • Crack the palm kernel using a cracking adapter driven by a small diesel engine
  • Separate the palm nuts from the shells through a mechanical sorter
  • Continue to separate the nuts using a water bath; the shells float while the nuts drop to the bottom
  • Crush the nuts into a paste using an adapter to the diesel engine
  • Boil the paste over a fire made by burning the shells
  • As the oil rises to the top of the cauldron, skim it off
  • Pour the collected oil into containers for storage
Palm oil typically is liquid at or near room temperature, in the 70 degree range.  Palm kernel oil is solid at room temperature and melts above 85 degrees.
